  • Opportunity at a Glance

    This position exists to support the production of juvenile marine fish for St. Kitts Aquaculture (SKA) and to oversee the general running of the Marine Laboratory (ML) for RUSVM. Therefore, the successful candidate will take responsibility for the day to day running of the Marine Lab and the adjacent fish nursery facility.

    Responsibilities

    • Organize and/or supervise the collection and delivery of marine water for storage in tanks to supply the ML and fish nursery
    • Organize and/or supervise the collection and delivery of marine water for the Chelonian lab, when required
    • After training from the consultant, be responsible for the operation of the equipment in the ML and fish nursery facility
    • Monitor and maintain good water quality for both facilities, using newly installed equipment
    • Maintain the correct water temperatures in both facilities and the water storage building
    • Take delivery of shipments of juvenile fish from SKA and transfer to the nursery facility
    • Feed the juvenile fish being produced for SKA and monitor feed consumption
    • Oversee basic nutritional experiments for SKA
    • Assist DVM and research students where possible in maintaining aquatic organisms in the ML

    Qualifications

    An academic qualification, to at least the BSc. level, in marine biology or a similar aquatic science is essential. Previous knowledge of working with water quality parameters and successful maintenance of aquaria for the long-term maintenance of marine organisms is highly desirable.

     

    Applicant must possess the ability to:

     

    • Capture and assimilate relevant data utilizing computer software and keep a record of water parameters and biological data
    • Report directly to the necessary personnel at RUSVM
    • Work with a diverse team that may include non-RUSVM personnel and local businesses in a variety of conditions
    • Work in a collegial manner
